Properly maintaining your gutters can help to prevent costly water damage to your home and can significantly extend the life of your gutters. Here are a for ways to keep your gutters in good shape so they last for generations.

Clean Your Gutters

You should clean out your gutters 2-3 times a year to ensure that they stay free flowing and exterior surface does not get stained.

Gutter Tune-up

Every few years you should do a tune up on your gutters and downspouts such as re-secure and re-pitch gutters, reseal corners, reattach loose downspouts and elbows.

Splash Blocks

Check to make sure your splash blocks are angled so the water flows away from the foundation of the house. Please do not angle them towards any walk or driveway since this could cause a slipping hazard.

Check For Clogged Gutters

How do you know if your gutters are clogged?

  • Are your gutters overflowing?
  • Is there restricted flow of water from your downspouts?
  • Do you see ground erosion below the gutter line?
  • Leaky corners?
  • Discoloration (not dirt, mold or mildew) on the gutter?

How to Clean Exterior of Gutters

Here’s a handy cleaning solution to help keep the exterior of your gutters and downspouts clean.

  • 1/3 cup laundry detergent (such as Tide, Wisk, etc.)
  • 2/3 cup Soilax (you can find it at Home Depot, etc.)
  • 1 quart liquid bleach (such as Clorox)
  • 3 quarts water

The cleaning solution can be either sprayed or sponge applied with a soft bristle brush. Allow it to remain for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with a hose. Rinse thoroughly. Avoid skin contact or getting the solution into your eyes.

Caution: Greater concentrations may cause damage to the finish. Never use abrasive or solvent type cleaners or paint removers.
